Chapter Seven

Moments of silence lingered between the two men. Shane was aware that he was staring, and this stranger was staring back, with the hint of an amused smile tugging at the corner of his lips. Shane gulped and stammered out an apology.

“I’m sorry, this is going to sound crazy, but you look just like the prince of a country called Lycanthia,” Shane said.

“Do you mean Prince Eric von Arnheim?” the man replied. He had a Scandinavian accent, which made the whole encounter uncanny, and Shane found the sound of it pleasing to his ears.

“You know of him?!” Shane asked, surprised that anyone else would know of the country.

“I am him,” Eric chuckled. Shane stared in disbelief, and then immediately cringed, not able to believe he had made such a fool of himself. He stared at Eric for a moment longer, just to make sure that it really was the same man he had seen pictures of, and that it wasn’t some kind of strange practical joke.

“I do have my credentials if you’d like me to prove myself,” Eric added, reaching into his jacket.

“No, no, that’s not necessary at all,” Shane said. “I’m sorry I just… I didn’t expect to meet a prince today, that’s all…or any other day for that matter,” he added under his breath. Eric seemed to find the whole thing amusing, although Shane thought he was going to die of embarrassment. But after that passed, a clear shard of clarity struck his mind and he frowned. “Hang on a minute, what is the Prince of Lycanthia doing here?” And then it dawned on him. This must be something to do with Boris, which indeed Eric confirmed as he revealed that he was looking for the previous owner of the store.

“I’m sorry, I’m afraid that Boris died,” Shane said.

“Died? How?”

“Well…a heart attack. It was unexpected. I’m sorry,” Shane said, hanging his head. Having to tell someone else the terrible news made him relive the grief all over again. Watching the emotions play on someone else’s face brought back the sadness and the anger, the hurt and the frustration at a cruel universe.

“I’m sorry too. I’m sure he was a fine man. Did he have any family I might contact?”

“I’m the closest thing he had to family. I’m his adopted son, Shane.”

Shane held out his hand as a matter of course and Eric took it. The moment their hands met Shane felt a burst of warm energy surge through him, as though he had been struck by a lightning bolt. His heart fluttered as he took Eric’s hand and something profound and real swam over him, enhancing the sense that he had never really lived until now.

“Then perhaps you can help me. I am looking for a particular item; the Chalice of Sinterbaum,” Eric said. Shane frowned. This must have been another one of Boris’ little deals on the side. Shane rubbed his jaw and leaned back.

“I don’t recall hearing about it. Unfortunately, Boris didn’t tell me much about these things.
